Hormones affect everyone from birth to death and they are as unique to each person as their own fingerprints. Hormonal symptoms are interconnected to our lifestyle, diet, environment and spirituality. Having a hormone imbalance or even a vitamin deficiency can directly affect your mental health, and cause some severe symptoms.

Hormone problems are very common. Studies have shown that about 80% of women suffer from some kind of hormonal imbalance, which results in a mix of physical and mental health challenges. Some of the most common symptoms and causes of hormonal imbalance include the following:

  • Lack of sleep, (also known as insomnia) is a common occurrence with a hormone imbalance. Low progesterone levels have a great deal of influence on sleep cycles for women. Therefore lack of progesterone leads to lack of sleep. And you know how we get when we have not slept! We get irritable, we experience mood swings, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and even decreased libido.

  • Night sweats and hot flashes can be related to a decrease in progesterone and estrogen.

  • Fatigue -  If you're battling night sweats, you probably are not sleeping well either. (See how everything starts to tie together?) When you are sleeping 7-8 hours of night and are experiencing fatigue, chances are, you are lacking in certain minerals such as iodine or vitamins such as D.

  • More importantly your blood sugar may be influencing how you are feeling. A diet high in the white stuff we love; sugar, rice, potato, bread, cereal and pasta create high insulin levels, and then lead to insulin resistance. When your blood sugar goes up and down, while you're processing all of that delicious white stuff, you begin to experience feelings of anxiety, irritability, cravings for sugar, and fatigue. One step you can take on your own is to work on your diet - there is some truth to "you are what you eat."

  • Low or no sex drive can be a symptom of low estrogen, testosterone and DHEA. You will also experience a decrease in your sex drive if your cortisol is high. High cortisol is caused by increased stress -- that stuff will kill you! You can help manage your cortisol levels with diet and exercise and supplements.

Make sure you are discussing ALL of your symptoms with your healthcare provider when you begin a hormone balancing program.
